Ceremony of Horus

I have always envisioned Horus as being similar to a Native American Brave embarking on a ‘coming of age’ quest. It is within that spirit of bravery and adventure, that this Ceremony has been written.
Our Coven Temple and campsite is located in what once was Native American hunting grounds. There are at least two burial sites within a short, (uphill) hiking distance, which play a part in the following rite.

Begin in the morning with a short reading of the events of Horus’s birth and the events which, preceded and followed it, while eating breakfast. After breakfast, everyone should assemble in the temple and stands in a loose circle around the Altar. Upon the altar should be a statue of Horus and the Coven cauldron. Make sure the cauldron is clean and dry. Give each person a slip of paper and an ink pen, and ask them to write down a spiritual quest that they need to perform. If they wish, they may write more than one quest, each on a separate slip of paper. Examples are:

Confronting a particular fear
Overcoming a negative emotion, personality trait, habit or weakness, such as anger, guilt, envy, lust, greed, laziness, addiction, etc.
Strengthening the bond between yourself and your God and Goddess

Each person writes their quest(s) down, folds the paper twice and places it inside the cauldron. One by one, each member should choose a slip of paper, and prepare themselves to perform the spiritual quest which the Great God Horus has chosen for them to undertake. They do not have to reveal the nature of the quest if they don’t wish to.
Alternatively, the Elders may have already prepared the slips of paper. If you choose to go this way, make sure there are twice as many slips of paper as there are participating members. Quests can be as specific or as vague as you wish.

As each person draws their quest and reads it, they should bow to the God and say:

I shall obey your desire and complete this quest.

They then leave the Temple and begin the quest. You might find it helpful to give each member a small package that will help them. A small backpack or satchel containing a, paper and pen, a bottle of water and a baggie of trail mix or fruit are all good choices.

The quests begin with a visit to a burial site to ask your ancestors for their wisdom and guidance during your spiritual quest. Leave an offering of some water and a little of your trail mix as a thank you gift and start your journey.

You may choose to wander the land, examining your soul to find the answers you seek. Some people may elect to find a quiet isolated spot to sit and think, others may be more comfortable staying on the move. The idea is to discover ways within yourself to work towards the goal that has been set for you. If you feel that the quest given to you is not one that you feel the need to work on, work on it anyway. There is a reason why you were given this quest. I'll bet you find an area or two in which there is room for improvement.

When you feel that you have completed the quest, or have done all the work which you can at this time, return to the Temple, bow to the God and tell him Thanks for his wisdom in choosing this quest for you.

NO ONE should feel hurried or pressed to complete the quest within that day, and everyone should return to camp before night fall. That evening, plan a get – together around the balefire in the Temple to discuss what you have discovered, update the Coven site map with good ‘secret’ meditation spots, and enjoyment of the evening together. This should be an informal ‘sitting around the fire’ type of thing. Roast hot dogs and make S’Mores for dinner, and consider awarding each person who participated a charm or amulet to wear with pride on their coven robe. Perhaps a silver or green feather?
