Festival of Anubis
By: Nydia and Sindarian

This festival should be performed during the evening hours, preferably during a new or crescent moon. It should be done outdoors, but does not require Sacred Space to be cast, unless you prefer it to be.

Tools Needed

1 black candle per person (tapers work best)

1 piece of hematite crystal per person

Balefire

Statue of Anubis

Set up your balefire and place the statue of Anubis at the West side of the balefire, facing the balefire. The statue should sit higher than the flames will reach. Ideally, the flames will make the statues eyes seem to glow. Sit or kneel directly opposite the statue on the other side of the balefire, with the crystal and black candle in your hands. The candle and balefire should be unlit to begin.

Meditate upon the Great God. Look at his statue and hold the hematite tightly in your left hand, with your fingers closed over the stone. Use the stone to help you focus your thoughts upon the Great God. Visualize Anubis descending from the skies and entering the statue. Say the following words of welcome.

Thank you for joining me (us), Great God Anubis.
I (we) ask for your blessings upon our lives
And upon this festival, which I (we) hold
in your honor and for your glory

Hear my (our) words, Anpu, Thanatos, Great God Anubis.
Bringer of the death from which springs eternal life
You have been with me (us) since my (our) soul(s)
Took the first breath upon this earth.
You have looked deep inside me (us)
And you know all my (our) hidden secrets.
I (we) praise your name and the power you control
I (we) look forward to the appointed day
When you come to guide me (us) through the underworld
And into the Hall of Ma’at for the judgment of my (our) soul (s).

Light the balefire. Then recite:

Anubis, Master of Magic, Guardian of the Necropolis
Keeper of the 21 gates.
When you come, all others flee.

Each person lights their black candles from the balefire and returns to their seats. The HP should read the following, while standing behind everyone, in the shadows.

I am the Watcher.

I sit on the western hill top and watch.
I see all that passes out upon the two lands.
I see that which is good, and that which is ill.

All that travels upon the lands, I know.
Of that which passes on it's waters, I see.
What creeps under the two lands, I feel.

What I know, has been protected.
What I see, has been warded.
What I feel, is under my guard.

I am the Watcher.

As my feet pad through the sands of the necropolis,
all around is at peace.

As my tail brushes the walls of the tomb,
no sound is heard among the living.

My nose senses those that bring ill to the dead,
and the bays from my throat brings fear to them.

I am the protector of those who cannot protect themselves.

I am the guardian of the weak.

I support those who may fall.

I am the shadow in the night.

The call from the western hills.

The flash of teeth, against the thieves.

I am the seal upon the tomb door,
and none may pass without my word.

I am the Watcher, Anubis.

Everyone says:

All praise the great god Anubis

Now is the time to do any divination or spell work that is needed. Good choices are illumination spells to reveal sources of negativity. Then banish that negativity from your life and reflect it back upon the one who sent it.

Divination work should focus on identifying upcoming problems and the steps which can be taken now to avoid them or prepare for them.

When all work has been finished, add more wood to the balefire if needed, and serve the feast foods. Good choices for feasting are ears of corn, baked potatoes, apples, squash, pumpkin, and chicken.
